  • Carts should not be placed beneath low-hanging tree branches.
  • Turn your cart handle toward your house with the lid opening toward the street.
  • All household garbage should be bagged and tied shut before placing in your cart to keep it clean. (But remember recyclables are loose in your recycle cart, not bagged.)
  • Make sure cart lids are closed and secure at all times to prevent litter.
  • Remove your empty cart from the curb by 7:30 p.m. on collection day.

  • Close the lid.
  • Place recyclables loose in the cart. Do not bag.

Don't Ruin the Whole Cart

Contaminants like broken glass, food, or bagged items can ruin recyclable materials and make them unrecoverable. Ask us. Or when in doubt, toss it out.

  • Keep everything loose, not bagged.
  • Empty and rinse all containers.
  • Keep newspapers, magazines, cardboard and office paper clean and dry.
  • Flatten cardboard and dispose of any packing material.
  • Place metal lids inside metal cans.

  • Cardboard and corrugated flattened and empty (no shipping or packing materials)

Be Cart Smart

Richland County provides one (1) garbage cart and one (1) recycling cart when service begins. One additional cart of each type may be requested for an additional fee. They belong to the County, but you’re responsible for keeping them in good shape.

Each cart is assigned to your address. Do not take it if you move or transport it elsewhere.

Roll Cart Placement

To ensure the safe collection of your trash, recyclables and yard waste:

  1. Space carts at least three feet from other objects.
  2. Face the bar on the cart toward the street.
  3. Keep lids closed. Do not overfill or pack carts tight.
  4. Place carts on a level surface near the curb (not in the street).
