How to Apply to Interview for a Richland County Board, Commission or Committee

Applicants must reside in Richland County and disclose any personal or financial interests that could be influenced in a group's decisions.

Step 1.Review the different groups.

  • Review the pages of the service groups you are interested in serving on.
  • Note the dates and times that the group meets to make sure your schedule allows you to attend those meetings.
  • Note any other special qualifications required.

Step 2.Reach out to your County Council representative.

You are strongly encouraged to speak with your County Council representative before applying to share your interest and willingness to serve.

Step 3.Only apply for a posted vacancy.

  • Submit your application and resume only for a posted vacancy.
  • If there are no vacancies in the group(s) you're interested in, you'll need to check back later.
  • Applications that are received expire after one year.

Step 4.We'll schedule your interview.

After you submit an application, the Clerk of Council’s Office will contact you to schedule a brief interview with the Rules and Appointments Committee. Interviews take place on Tuesday afternoons.

Richland County Council will accept applications through November6, 2026 at 5 p.m. for Service on the following Boards, Commissions, or Committees:

Now accepting applications to serve on the following:

  1. Accommodations Tax Committee – Five (5) Vacancies (TWO applicants must have a background in the Lodging Industry, ONE applicant must have a background in the Hospitality Industry, ONE applicant must have a cultural background, and ONE is an At-Large vacancy)
  2. Airport Commission – One (1) Vacancy (Appointment is for the Jim Hamilton-L.B. Owens Airport)
  3. Architectural Review Board – Five (5) Vacancies (ONE must represent the Architecture Industry, ONE must represent the Building Industry, ONE must represent the Real Estate Industry, ONE must represent the Historic Preservation/Conservation Industry, and ONE is an At-Large vacancy)
  4. Board of Zoning Appeals – Two (2) Vacancies
  5. Building Codes Board of Appeals – Six (6) Vacancies (ONE applicant must be from the Architecture Industry, ONE applicant must be from the Gas Industry, ONE applicant must be from the Plumbing Industry, ONE applicant must be from the Engineering Industry, and TWO applicants must be from the Fire Industry as alternates)
  6. Business Service Center Appeals Board – Four (4) Vacancies (TWO applicants must be CPAs, ONE applicant must represent the Business Industry, and ONE must be an Attorney)
  7. Central Midlands Council of Governments – Two (2) Vacancies
  8. East Richland Public Service Commission – One (1) Vacancy
  9. Employee Grievance Committee – Four (4) Vacancies (Applicants must be Richland County Government Employees) (TWO of the vacancies are for alternates)
  10. Historic Columbia – One (1) Vacancy
  11. Hospitality Tax Committee – One (1) Vacancy
  12. Lexington Richland Alcohol and Drug Abuse Council (LRADAC) – One (1) Vacancy
  13. Midlands Workforce Development Board – Two (2) Vacancies (ONE Applicant must represent the Apprenticeship Industry and ONE Applicant must represent the Private Sector)
  14. Music Festival Commission – One (1) Vacancy
  15. Richland Library Board – Six (6) Vacancies
  16. Richland Memorial Board – Three (3) Vacancies
  17. Transportation Penny Advisory Committee (TPAC) – One (1) Vacancy

The Rules and Appointments Committee will tentatively start the interview process in December 2026, with recommendations for appointments following thereafter.
