Building Permits

Permitting is responsible for issuing permits for commercial and residential work for any

  • new construction,
  • reconstruction,
  • alteration,
  • repair,
  • movement and setup of a building to another site, and
  • removal or demolition of any building.

 

Homeowners

This guide outlines the basic steps for Homeowners wanting to act as their own contractor for constructions activities on their primary residence. Whether you’re starting a home-based business, opening a storefront, or offering services, this will help you know where to begin.

Step 1.Contact the Building Permitting Office to determine if your project will require a permit.

  • Property Setbacks and accessory structures should be verified through Zoning Department.

Step 2.Apply for the permit at our permitting counter.

  • Property owners must come to the Building Department to apply for the building permit in person.
  • Online application is not available at this time.

Bring these required documents:

  1. Proof of Property Ownership (**Statement of Disclosure will be required by law for homeowners acting as an Owner/Build for their project)
  2. Copy of Property Plat
  3. Architectural Drawings of purposed project (Omit if applying for Electrical, Plumbing or Mechanical Permits)
  4. Names and License numbers of any sub-contractors hired to complete work on your project.
  5. Applicable applications for permits; permitting staff will provide the needed forms to fill out.

Step 3.Application is submitted for review and approval.

  • May take up to 14 days for approval

Step 4.Permit issued.

  • Once all required forms, documents, and department approvals are complete, return to the Building Permitting Counter.
  • Permit Specialist will collect payment and issue your building permit.

**Homeowners acting as Owner/Builders are required to fill out a Statement of Disclosure. This document prevents the owner from selling or renting the home for a period of two years. The document must be Notarized and the taken to the Register of Deeds to be filed.

Residential Contractor

Licensed Residential Contractors will be required to use our Online Contractor’s Program for their permitting applications.

Contractors with a registered account can click on the link to apply for their permits.
