Unsafe Housing or Abandoned Homes in Your Neighborhood

Seeing an abandoned home or building in your area can be frustrating and sometimes unsafe. If you’re concerned about a neglected property, Richland County is here to help.

Report an Abandoned Property

If you know of an abandoned house or building, contact the Richland County Property Maintenance Division to report it. Let us know the exact location so we can take the next steps.

What Happens After You Report It?

Once a report is received, our Property Maintenance Team will:

  1. Investigate the property.
  2. Locate the property owner.
  3. Require the owner to secure or repair the structure.

Permits are Required to Board Up a Property

A permit is required to board up a building in order to secure it properly and meet code requirements.

Time Limit for Boarded Up Properties

A structure can be boarded up for up to 180 days. If needed, that time can be extended for another 180 days.

Demolition of Abandoned Homes

Richland County can demolish an abandoned home but only as a last resort. If the County is unable to locate the owner or the owner fails to take action, we may begin the demolition process.

Demolition Decisions

The structure will be inspected by our team. If it’s found to be structurally unsafe, the County may move forward with demolition for public safety.

If you have questions or want to report a property, contact the Richland County Property Maintenance Division today. We’re here to keep our neighborhoods safe, clean, and strong.
