The Fire Marshal's office helps protect lives and property by increasing awareness of fire safety and making sure buildings follow fire and safety codes.

Open Burning in Richland County

  • Burning yard waste or other materials is not allowed in residential zoning areas.
  • Burning in rural zoning areas must be at least 75 feet away from any structure, road, or property line.
  • All burning must follow state and county fire safety laws.
  • Fires must be attended at all times by someone responsible.
  • Water or a fire extinguisher must be nearby.
  • The County Fire Marshal or County Council can ban burning during unsafe weather or air quality conditions.
