(Richland PIO) – Today, District 2 Councilman Derrek Pugh, Vice Chair of Richland County Council, welcomed Maryland Gov. Wes Moore for a tour of economic development investment in the district. The two leaders discussed recent investments in the region and the best practices that have led to impactful business growth and job creation in the County.
In recent years, Richland County’s strategic investments, bolstered by a strong workforce pipeline and a geographic location providing easy access for shipping and transportation hubs, as well as the County’s low cost of living, abundant natural resources and favorable climate, have attracted the attention of domestic and foreign businesses.
"Meetings like these highlight the importance of collaboration and building relationships nationally that can produce benefits down the road,” Vice Chair Pugh said. “As Richland County continues to grow, my colleagues on County Council and I look forward to strengthening these relationships and turning ideas into meaningful solutions to improve the lives of our residents."
The benefits of new industry include:
- an economic boost for the local economy
- new job opportunities
- support for local suppliers and services
- expanded housing options for families
- enriched quality of life
Council District 2, in particular, has experienced transformative success in attracting both emerging industry and established international corporations. These include Scout Motors, the electric vehicle maker that chose Blythewood as the site for its new $2 billion, 1,600-acre production center in 2023.
Today’s visit from Gov. Moore is a clear indication that Richland County’s vision and strategy for attracting new business is improving growth and prosperity, along with attracting the attention of business leaders nationally and around the globe.
