Geocaching is an outdoor adventure game, similar to a treasure hunt but played with a GPS device. The basic idea is to locate hidden containers, called geocaches, and then share your experiences online. There are more than a million active geocaches around the world! Through Richland County’s Drains Aren’t Dumps series, you can learn ways to keep Columbia’s rivers clean while experiencing local public art and seeking fun caches.
Steps for the Drains Aren’t Dumps series
- Download a Drains Aren’t Dumps Passport.
- If you are not already registered for geocaching, go to geocaching.com, create a log-in and find the GPS coordinates and additional information for the Drains Aren’t Dumps locations.
- Start your search and locate one or all caches using a hand-held GPS unit or your phone using the Geocaching mobile app. The cache containers are labeled as a Drains Aren’t Dumps geocache. Caches are located in three neighborhoods around Columbia, S.C.
- When you find a Drains Aren’t Dumps cache, log your name and any comments on the logbook inside the container. Also, fill in your Drains Aren’t Dumps Passport with the code unique to that particular cache, also located within the container.
To receive your Drains Aren’t Dumps coin, email stormwater@richlandcountysc.gov with a photo of your completed passport to arrange to pick up your coin or have it mailed to you. You need only complete two of the three caches on your passport to get a coin!
