September 2020 – Hitting the Brakes on S.P.E.E.D for PARK(ing) Day
Description: PARK(ing) Day is a demonstration for open-source urban design, accessible to all. In response, thousands of people around the globe create hundreds of “PARK” installations during the annual international event. The mission of PARK(ing) Day is to call attention to the need for more urban open space, to generate critical debate around how public space is created and allocated, and to improve the quality of urban human habitat.
While PARK(ing) Day is going virtual due to Covid19 for 2020, this year’s event is held on September 18. Staff thought it was important to celebrate virtually with the citizens to provide an educational opportunity on the importance of creating public spaces, rethinking the design of those spaces, and how public art can be an amenity to an area.
The City of Columbia is also celebrating virtually by posting on social media platforms @CityofColumbia, @ColaCompass, @ASLA.SouthCarolina, and @OneColumbia.
Learn about the history of PARK(ing) day on CityLab or the resources below.
