Engage Richland – Neighborhood Improvement is a year-round series of public events focused on engaging residents at the neighborhood level and equipping citizens with the knowledge and skills necessary to improve their communities. Via events, workshops, panels and trainings, Engage Richland – Neighborhood Improvement will provide resources and facilitate connections that will better enable neighborhood leaders to create and sustain happy, healthy communities through physical, financial and civic infrastructure.

October 2018 - Neighborhood Toolkit and Certification Program
Description: Richland County Neighborhood Improvement Program staff will take County residents through a four-week course on establishing a plan for their neighborhoods. The Neighborhood Toolkit will be utilized to guide residents through the process of creating bylaws, a vision, mission, goals and objectives for their community and neighborhood-scale projects they can implement. The course will culminate in a Spirit Week event where participants will be asked to share what they learned about Neighborhood Planning and how they will apply that knowledge to improve where they live. Registration will be capped at 30 participants. The registration cutoff date is Monday October 1, 2018.

October 22-26, 2018 – Spirit Week to Celebrate National Community Planning Month
Description: Community Planning Month seeks to raise the visibility of the Planning profession and showcase the positive impact it has on our communities. Planning month is a way for citizens to learn more about local Planning initiatives, meet their planners and attend Planning related meetings and events that will help directly shape the communities in which they live. Richland County’s Planning and Development Services Division will celebrate Community Planning Month by hosting various activities, events and trainings throughout October. Connections Make Community is the theme for this year’s Spirit Week highlighting the importance of relationships, linkages and networks in supporting sustainable, engaged communities.

November 2018 – Richland County Grant Training
Description: Grant Training sessions provide an opportunity for Richland County residents interested in grants applicable to their community to learn more about available grants and application processes. Neighborhood Improvement Program staff will provide an overview of the Neighborhood Matching Grant, what it can be used for and what all is needed in order to submit a successful application.

February 2019 – Making Government Work for You
Description: Making Government Work for You is envisioned as a panel discussion around government processes and the various citizen-centric Divisions and Departments that exist to aid County residents in navigating local government. This panel will aid in clarifying the role of each Division and Department while presenting residents of unincorporated Richland County with information about the various initiatives, events and trainings that are ongoing. Finally, as a newer Division, this panel will allow Government & Community Services to introduce themselves to the public and explain the services it provides.

April 2019 – Exploring your Earth Day
Description: Exploring Your Earth Day will highlight greenspaces in unincorporated Richland County, encouraging citizens to get outside in observation of Earth Day. This event will include an educational scavenger hunt highlighting local plants and animals. Participants will also be given information about other Richland County parks they can explore.

May 2019 – Getting to Know your Budget
Description: Getting to Know Your Budget gives Richland County citizens a better understanding of the budget process with the ultimate goal of understanding where their tax dollars end up. The municipal budgeting process is often employs methods people do not understand. This event gives citizens an overview of the total budgeting process from who and what tax dollars fund to the decision-making processes along the way. Getting to Know Your Budget will entail an overview session leading up to Richland County Council Budget work sessions.

Description: The annual neighborhood Block Party provides Richland County neighborhoods with an opportunity to showcase activities, events and accomplishments. Neighbors from across the County join together to celebrate all of the past year’s successes.
