After retiring from a successful career with the S.C. Department of Mental Health, Greg Pearce was first elected to Richland County Council in 1998 and has served continuously since 1999. He represents areas in southeast Columbia, most of which lie in the incorporated boundaries of the City of Columbia and Forest Acres.
Although Mr. Pearce’s Council interests are varied, his primary expertise falls within the area of healthcare and human services. He serves as the Council liaison to the Richland Memorial Hospital Board, the Columbia Area Mental Health Center Board, the LRADAC Board and the Transitions Homeless Center Board. During past years on Council, Mr. Pearce has served on various ad hoc committees and commissions dealing with a wide range of human service needs. Mr. Pearce considers the arts to play a vital role in overall quality of life for the citizens of Richland County. In his County Council role, he serves on the Columbia Museum of Art Board and Historic Columbia Foundation Board and is one of several Council representatives to the Township Auditorium Board. He previously served on the EdVenture Children's Museum Board.
The Richland County budget has presented challenges for County Council in that the wants and needs of County residents and employees consistently exceed the financial resources available. Since his election, Mr. Pearce has focused his attention on developing a detailed understanding the County budget to ensure that he makes responsible recommendations as to how these limited financial resources should be allocated. He has served several times as chair of the Administration & Finance Committee and is also active on the budget committee.
